Solar Eclipse Walk to Fox’s Pulpit
On Wednesday 12th August a group of around fifty gathered at Fox’s Pulpit to view the solar eclipse. Many had walked together from Firbank Church Hall, taking in the breath-taking views of the Howgill Fells along the way. Others joined us at Fox’s Pulpit to share in a picnic together whilst watching the once-in-generation event. The skies were clear and the partial eclipse, which peaked shortly after 7.00pm did not disappoint. Armed with plenty of pairs of solar glasses, everyone was able to witness this astronomical spectacle for themselves. The skies darkened and an erie quietness fell over the landscape. There was barely a breeze as we watched the moon move in front of the sun.
As the light began to increase again we joined together for a short service with prayers, hymns and a brief thought about the significance of the event. We considered how Christians have long seen in the Sun a reflection of Christ, who said, "I am the light of the world." Just as the Sun illuminates our physical world, Jesus brings light to our spiritual lives. Standing in the place where George Fox himself preached to over a thousand people we considered how he encouraged people to seek ‘the light of Christ within’ and how he believed that God's light shines into every human heart, guiding, correcting and inviting us into truth. We concluded by remembering that an eclipse is only temporary. However dark it becomes, we know the light will return and that that too is a Christian hope. Darkness never has the final word.
With the light returning, many of us completed a circular route back to Firbank Church Hall for refreshments. A time of fellowship, wonder and praise was enjoyed by all.
Prayers for the solar eclipse
Loving God, we thank you for this Earth, for the Sun whose warmth sustains life, for the Moon and stars, for the beauty of these hills and for this place where generations have gathered to seek you.
We pray for scientists, teachers and all who help us understand your creation. May knowledge lead us not to pride but to greater wonder and wiser stewardship of the world you have entrusted to us.
We pray for all whose lives are overshadowed today - those who are anxious, those who mourn, those who are ill, those who feel that darkness has settled over them. May they know your presence, your comfort and your hope.
We remember George Fox and all who have sought to follow Christ faithfully. Give us courage to listen for your voice, to walk in the Light and to be peacemakers in our communities.
May today's eclipse remind us of our small place within your vast creation and of your immeasurable love for every one of us. Amen.
